Leadership

"We learned about honesty and integrity - that the truth matters... that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules... and success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and square."

~ Michelle Obama

Leadership Ethics

CPS 410

Prof. George Ferguson

Summer 2018

Ethics can guide leadership and will ultimately affect workplace behavior. Leadership Ethics at ODU is formatted as an ongoing Discussion Board communication between the professor and students in a team atmosphere where ongoing conversations help to foster a sharing of ideas. The course expands knowledge in areas of promoting positive behaviors by workers, valuing ethical decision-making and personal integrity by the leader, and offers students a chance for self-discovery about how it applies to their own life.

Applying ethical leadership to the real world

What am I called to do?

Lead groups (people or projects) in an effort to inspire and empower myself and others to get the most out of whatever is placed before them.

I am at my best when I am guiding people and/or projects. When working with individuals, I use words of encouragement to empower others as they move towards what they want in life and dedicate myself to help others feel supported and cared for.  Additionally, I find it important to balance listening and articulating others’ thoughts in an effort to create buy-in.

Prof. Ferguson required students to complete a Best-Self Assessment assignment as an exploration for becoming a little clearer about what students are called to do. The point of the assignment is that ethical leaders are doing what they are meant to do in life. As such, they do it to the best of their ability.

In 2002, I joined WW (formerly Weight Watchers) and have been leading and facilitating groups as a Coach for 18 years. I love doing it. It is vital to build relationships, help with planning, problem-solving, and demonstrate integrity in how I represent myself and the company as an employee. I am more driven to the ethical qualities of my best self because I want to do what I love to the best of my ability.

Included on this page is an interactive Powerpoint demonstrating the values of ethical leadership in connection with my job as a Coach.
